Bitget sings Lionel Messi for World Cup 2022 promotion

With the World Cup just around the corner, crypto exchange Bitget has signed a deal with none other than Lionel Messi. The exclusive web3 agreement includes digital currency rewards of up to 100 Bitcoin during and after the November 2022 tournament in Qatar.

This is a rare advertising effort from a crypto exchange amid the current broad downturn in digital asset prices, and one might say it's a bit of a gamble. After all, who knows what the world of cryptocurrency will look like by the time the World Cup rolls around? But with Lionel Messi on their side, Bitget is clearly feeling confident. It looks like they're trying to gain exposure for their brand by signing deals with high-profile celebrities and athletes right before the event. This marketing strategy has worked well for other companies in the past, and it will be interesting to see if it pays off for them.

Bitget isn't the first to sign a deal with a big name in sports. In January 2018, another crypto exchange, Crypto.com, announced a sponsorship deal with UEFA worth $498 million. That deal was eventually called off, however, due to the market conditions at the time.

Only time will tell if this was a good decision, but for now we can relish in the fact that the well-known "Flea" is now a cryptocurrency ambassador.

The most expensive digital skateboards?

Who would have thought that skateboards could be so expensive? The Azuki team recently completed an auction for eight Golden Skateboard NFTs. The lowest winning bid was 200 ETH ($261,682.00) and the highest was 309 ETH ($404,298.69), which is an insane amount of money for a digital skateboard.

Some skateboards are worth more than others it seems, and these nonfungible tokens (NFTs) are some of the most expensive ones out there. Redeemable for physical skateboards, they're a hot commodity among collectors.

Originally, Azuki was just a collection of 10,000 anime-inspired characters, each with different moods and accessories. However, the recent sale of an NFT set for 420.7 ETH (roughly $1.4 million) has put the project on the map.

It is reported that the physical Golden Skateboards will be available in November, and the team is currently taking bids for the first batch. The team was seeking $30 million in a Series A funding round last month and launched the Golden Skateboard auction right after. With the bids they received, it's safe to say that they were successful.

The Azuki team is doing something right, which is more than can be said for some other NFT projects in the space. It will be interesting to see how the team develops the project further, and whether or not the Golden Skateboards will maintain their value.

INTERPOL Metaverse concept unveiled at 90th General Assembly

Here's an idea: let's build a giant, online world where all the cops from around the globe can come together and help each other fight crime. At least that's what INTERPOL is hoping to achieve with the new law enforcement-specific Metaverse.

The concept, which was unveiled at the 90th INTERPOL General Assembly in New Delhi, India, intends to bring law enforcement officials together for the purpose of cooperation and training. And yes, that includes cops from different countries working together in virtual reality.

Delegates had the opportunity to experience the INTERPOL Metaverse during interactive sessions set up by developers. And according to INTERPOL Secretary General Jürgen Stock, the Metaverse will support the organization's goal of fighting crime in both the real world and online.

But while the digital cup of Joe and non-fungible donuts sound great in theory, it remains to be seen how effective the INTERPOL Metaverse will be in practice. Will this be yet another gimmicky money drain that quickly gathers dust, or will it be an invaluable tool for law enforcement officials? With the new tech, it can go either way.
