EU's proposed crypto regulation could kill the industry, according to Blockchain for Europe

The EU's proposed Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation could be a disaster for the industry if it comes into effect in its current form, according to crypto lobbyists.

In a letter to the EU Council, Blockchain for Europe and the Digital Euro Association have warned that MiCA’s plans to introduce restrictions on crypto tokens could impact USDT, USDC, and BUSD.

The MiCA is a proposed regulation that would restrict the use and issuance of tokens not denominated in an official currency of one of the EU's 27 member states. The proposal contains plans about introducing restrictions on tokens used as means of exchange, which Blockchain for Europe and the Digital Euro Association have both criticized because it could theoretically apply to stablecoins used for trading purposes.

The experts have warned that the ruling could cause “extreme short-term volatility” and “a major outflow of crypto activities outside of the EU.” That's because euro-pegged stablecoins account for such a tiny fraction of the market relative to USDT, USDC, and BUSD.

I mean, come on. It's unrealistic to expect EUR stablecoins to catch up. They're just too tiny and insignificant. So I just hope EU regulators will reconsider their plans, or else they risk killing the crypto industry in Europe.

Netflix doc claims John McAfee faked his death

According to the new documentary, John McAfee's ex-girlfriend Samantha Herrera claims that the crypto personality faked his own death. This is just further proof that you can't believe everything you see on the internet – even if it's from a supposedly reputable source like Netflix.

Herrera's claims suggest that McAfee didn't actually hang himself in a Spanish prison while awaiting extradition, but managed to escape and return to the United States. She says that he asked her to run away with him, and told her there were only three people in the world who knew he was still alive.

However, there's no known corroboration of Herrera's claims at this time, and McAfee's remains are reportedly being held in a Spanish morgue. So it looks like we'll just have to wait and see if this story turns out to be true or not. In the meantime, don't believe everything you read.

In October 2020, McAfee was arrested in Spain on charges of tax evasion. The Spanish National Court authorized his extradition on June 23, 2021. However, a few hours after the news was announced, McAfee was found dead in his prison cell. The official autopsy concluded that McAfee had committed suicide.

In December 2019, McAfee launched the WHACKD token. Following reports of Herrera’s claims, the token surged by 9% on Uniswap.

Cardano Vasil upgrade: almost there

Cardano is halfway through its Vasil upgrade, and things are looking good so far. 36% of stake pool operators (SPOs) have updated their nodes to the new version, and Input Output has onboarded at least 25 cryptocurrency exchanges. The mainnet launch is still on track for sometime in the near future.

However, there is still some work to be done before the upgrade is complete. 75% of SPOs need to update their nodes, and Input Output needs to onboard at least 25 more cryptocurrency exchanges. But at this rate, it looks like Cardano will be ready for its big upgrade in no time.

The much-anticipated Vasil hardfork combination event, named after the late Bulgarian mathematician Vasil Dabov, is finally underway. However, it has not been without its share of holdups and postponements.

Despite this, Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson remains optimistic about the final stages of the hardfork's execution. In a recent statement, Hoskinson said that there is neither conflict nor quality issue with Vasil hardfork deployment.

We can only hope that the hardfork will live up to its namesake and be a success.
